Overhauling Your Look

Three Cosmetic Procedures To Help You Combat Facial Aging

As you get older, it is common for the skin to lose its elasticity and begin to sag or wrinkle. The face also starts to lose fat and the body slows down its production of collagen; you may notice that certain areas, like your lips and cheeks, appear thinner. If aging has left you self conscious about your appearance, now is the time to research cosmetic procedures that can help you turn back time.

1. Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a temporary way to improve the appearance of wrinkles and creases in the face. It can also help areas that have lost volume regain their former fullness.

Your cosmetic professional will numb your face and sanitize the areas that are to receive the fillers. Fillers are then injected into the agreed upon areas. Downtime is minimal, though you may have some swelling or light bruising for a couple days after your injections.

You can expect your fillers to last up to a few years; maintaining a healthy lifestyle (consuming a nutritious diet, avoiding UV exposure, avoiding tobacco products) can help prolong the results.

2. Face Lift

A face lift is a dramatic surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the face. Your surgeon then tightens the existing skin to give you a more youthful appearance. If you feel like your face needs additional volume, your surgeon can combine the face lift with the insertion of fillers.

Since a face lift requires surgery, you can expect your recovery to be more intensive than other alternatives. You may have to wear bandages or have drains inserted to help the face properly heal. Expect to take a couple of weeks off work, as bruising and swelling after a face lift can be relatively severe.

Face lifts are also more expensive than other anti-aging procedures. However, the results are also long-lasting.

3. Microdermabrasion Treatments

If your skin has a lot of sun spots, discoloration, and fine lines, microdermabrasion is a procedure that reduces the appearance of these common signs of aging. Your technician will use a wand to scrape the skin cells off your face and remove them. The result is smoother, younger looking skin.

This procedure is painless and has no down time. However, to maintain the results, you need to continue with your microdermabrasion treatments indefinitately. Ideally, you should have a treatment every few weeks. The results of microdermabrasion may not be dramatic enough for some.

You can combine microdermabrasion treatments with other anti-aging procedures, such as chemical peels and the use of injectables.
