FAQs About The Top Post-Pandemic Plastic Surgery Procedures

What are the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the U.S.? Restrictions, closures, and quarantines in the first few months (and even years) of the pandemic caused a significant drop in the number of procedures. But this didn't last long. If you're ready to make a post-pandemic change, take a look at what you need to know about the plastic surgery center services.

Are There New Top Procedures?

According to The Aesthetic Society's Aesthetic Plastic Surgery National Databank, in 2021 the number of total procedures in the U.S. increased by 54 percent. Body surgeries saw the biggest jump in post-quarantine/shut-down procedures, with a total increase of 63 percent between 2020 and 2021. The two most noticeable changes were a 63 percent increase in liposuction and a 49 percent change in abdominoplasties.

Even though body-related procedures had the largest change in the first post-lockdown year, facial surgeries also surged. The Aesthetic Society notes that the "Zoom Effect" may have caused the 55 percent spike in facial surgeries. The "Zoom Effect" refers to the magnification and amplification of minor facial flaws on video calls.

What Are the Top Procedures?

The Aesthetic Society's statistics show that in 2021 the top plastic surgical procedures were:

  • Liposuction. With 491,098 procedures in 2021, this was the most popular pick. Liposuction uses suction to surgically remove fat from the abdominal, thigh, buttocks, neck, or arm areas.

  • Breast augmentation. The 364,753 procedures in 2021 show that this procedure is popular. A breast augmentation surgery can change the size and shape of your breasts. But the procedure won't lift your breasts.

  • Tummy tucks. There were 242,939 tummy tucks in 2021. As the name implies, a tummy tuck is an abdominal fat removal procedure.

  • Breast lifts. The statistics show that there were 167,395 in 2021. This surgery does what the name implies and lifts the breasts higher.

Which Procedure Is the Right Choice For You?

Even though liposuction was the most popular procedure in 2021, the jump in surgeries doesn't mean it's the right option for you. Before you pick a procedure, you need to think about what you want to change about your body/face, why you want to make the change, what your expectations for the change are, and how the procedure will affect your overall health.

A plastic surgeon can help you to learn more about your options and weigh the pros and cons. These could include health benefits, health risks, recovery time, and aesthetic outcome. For more information on plastic surgery, contact a professional near you.
