Overhauling Your Look

Your Guide To Botox Treatments

Botox is commonly used to help fight the signs of aging. If you want to keep your skin looking great for as long as possible, you may be considering Botox. If you would like to know more about Botox to determine if it is the right choice for you, keep reading.

What Does Botox Do?

Botox is a safe medical material created from the same bacteria that cause botulism. When used in small amounts, Botox can be used to paralyze small muscles in the face that control facial movements, such as:

  • Smiling
  • Frowning
  • Raising eyes/eyebrows
  • Squinting
  • Furrowing your brow

The treatment does not prevent you from making these expressions, but it relaxes the muscles, which keeps the skin smoother when you make these facial expressions.

Who Should Consider Botox?

If you have wrinkles that appear when you make certain facial expressions, you may want to consider Botox. However, Botox works best when you start using it before wrinkles appear. When your face repeatedly creases during facial expressions, there is a greater risk of the crease deepening. Eventually, the crease appears even when you don't make facial expressions. With Botox, however, the face doesn't repeatedly crease.

You may not want to consider Botox if you already have wrinkles (without making facial expressions) and/or sagging. Instead, ask about dermal fillers. These use materials like hyaluronic acid to add volume to the face and fill in fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Of course, you can choose Botox and dermal fillers if needed.

How Long Do Results Last?

Since Botox uses neurotoxins, it can take up to two weeks for full results to appear. As soon as the Botox is injected, your body tries to break it down. If your body has a faster metabolism, your results may not last as long as someone with a slower metabolism. However, in general, Botox results last about 3 to 4 months.

Luckily, Botox isn't as expensive as other cosmetic procedures. You'll pay about $300 to $1,200, depending on who administers it and how many units you need. Typically, dermatologists charge more than nurses. Because Botox is so popular, many clinics also offer packages and/or discounts if you pay for multiple treatments.

Botox can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles to keep your skin looking healthier and younger for longer. It can even be used along with other treatments to get great results without surgery. Contact a professional to learn more about Botox treatments
